Cameron: Eliminate the deficit by 2018 and run a surplus by 2019

 
“We will be back in the black, but only if the Conservatives are back in Government.”
Appearing on the ITV Leaders’ Debate in April 2015. David Cameron promised: “We will eliminate the deficit.”

Launching his party’s manifesto later that month, the Conservative leader reaffirmed his pledge: “There’s a balanced plan to clear the deficit. We’ll do it in the next few years… What’s more, by 2018 we’ll be running a surplus.”

From the Conservative manifesto: “In 2018-19, we are set to move into surplus.”
